Eastern equine encephalitis has been found in two batches of mosquitoes in Manchester, city officials confirmed Wednesday.Manchester health officials said the batches were the first to test positive for EEE in the city this year. There have been no confirmed cases of EEE in humans or animals this year.The virus can cause flu-like symptoms. In more serious cases, those infected can develop encephalitis, or inflammation of the brain, which can lead to permanent nervous system damage or death.Health officials said people should protect themselves from being bitten by mosquitoes by using repellent containing DEET, picaridin or oil of lemon eucalyptus. When mosquitoes are most active during evening, nighttime and dawn hours, people should wear long pants, long-sleeved shirts and socks, officials said.Homeowners should eliminate standing water on their properties where mosquitoes can breed, officials said.
