Dzeko: 'Roma not at Serie A level'

Roma captain Edin Dzeko expressed his frustration after a 4-2 defeat at Sassuolo. “We were not playing at Serie A level. If two or three players are not delivering, it can cause problems.”

The Giallorossi were 3-0 down after just 30 minutes, but a second half comeback was ruined by a Jeremie Boga scorcher and Lorenzo Pellegrini’s red card.

“I keep telling the lads, give me the ball, I am not getting much service at the moment,” Dzeko told DAZN.

“The trouble with the pressing game is that all it takes is one person to be late and it all falls apart. In the first half this evening, quite frankly, we were not playing at Serie A level.

“I think it’s a very exciting style of football, we always want to keep the ball, but if two or three players are not delivering at the top level, then it can cause problems.

“Nobody was at our normal level tonight, especially in the first half. We hope to forget this game as soon as possible, as we dropped three points and need to get them back against Bologna next week, there is no other option.”

Dzeko scored with a header, but he could’ve had another when Manuel Locatelli managed an astonishing block.

“It was a miraculous goal-line clearance, he did really well. I didn’t see the ball when (Bryan) Cristante hit it, I turned and it was a little higher than I expected, so I had to wait for it to come down.”

The Bosnian still got his 100th competitive goal in the Roma jersey, but which was his favourite?

“The goal against Chelsea at London, I think, is my favourite. I had hoped to mark my 100th goal in different circumstances, but we can’t cry over spilt milk.”

Dzeko is the new Roma captain after Alessandro Florenzi was loaned out to Valencia, and becomes the first non-Italian Giallorossi captain since Aldair.

“These are choices that people have to make. Alessandro is a very important player for us, he was our captain, but I do understand that the Euros are a big event and I hope he can get more regular playing time in Valencia.”

It seems to be working, as Florenzi was immediately placed in the starting XI for Valencia against Celta Vigo this evening, almost scoring his debut La Liga goal.
