Douglas County health officials provide flu update after first death of the season is confirmed

Officials have confirmed there has been one flu death in Douglas County.A woman, described as being over the age of 65, recently died from the flu. It is believed to be the first flu death of the season. Nebraska is one of 19 states experiencing high levels of influenza-like illness (ILI) activity.Officials said that in Douglas County, 2,404 laboratory-confirmed cases of influenza have been reported. There were 813 cases reported just this week. Six outbreaks in long-term care (LTC) facilities and one in a correctional facility have been reported.The CDC reports last week 18,000 people in the United States have died of the flu this year, and last week nine kids died. Last year 61,000 people died. Officials said it’s not too late to get vaccinated. Influenza vaccination is the best way to reduce the risk from flu and its potentially serious complications.
