Dancing With the Stars recap: Leah Remini was a freakin’ hoot of a guest judge

Good news from the ballroom, fringe fans: everyone was (relatively) injury-free on Monday so everybody hit the dance floor! No more avoiding the chopping block because somebody re-injured his football foot. It was time for America and Carrie Ann Inaba, Len Goodman, Bruno Tonioli and — well, look who’s here, it’s a lippy Leah Remini! — to send someone home.
It’s curtain time!

Lamar Odom and Peta Murgatroyd: The baller garnered major respect and empathy for his struggles on the dance floor, but his Viennese waltz — however tender and sweet — was not enough to keep him out of last place. “I’m getting emotional, Lamar, because I don’t know if everybody knows how hard you work and how hard this is for you,” said Remini, who had zero patience for the pair of 4s given by Goodman and Tonioli. Totes agree, girl. Score: 20 out of 40

Sean Spicer and Lindsay Arnold: Fighting his tendency to look robotic, the former press secretary fist-pumped his way through a Pasodoble that lacked emotion but earned attaboys for its meticulousness. And he got to go first for the night! “You attacked the dance,” said Goodman. “You weren’t scared to get out there.” “Sean is not a dancer, that’s very clear,” said Remini. “But what I love about you is that you are committed, you try your best.” Score: 21 out of 40

Kate Flannery and Pasha Pashkov: She deserved a perfect score just for admitting “I can’t believe at 55 I get to dance with a hot Russian” during the rehearsal package. Unfortunately, her Argentine tango wasn’t quite as blistering. “From the beginning, your energy is amazing and you represent a lot of us,” said Remini. “We are not dancers. We are comedic actors.” “You definitely went for it,” added Tonioli. “You lost balance quite a few times. You lost the smoothness of the Argentine tango.” Score: 26 out of 40

Karamo Brown and Jenna Johnson: The Queer Eye host’s tango earned him the enviable last performance on the show and some serious support from Remini. “You really turned on that kind of leading man attitude,” said Tonioli. “There were no mistakes tonight.” “That was my favorite dance of yours thus far,” added Inaba, who wasn’t keen on the way he lifted Jenna at the start of the number. Remini wasn’t having any of it and — quelle surprise — got up in Inaba’s grill. They bickered and mocked each other. Goodman looked annoyed. In other words, someone needs to invite back Remini. But I digress. Score: 28 out of 40

James Van Der Beek and Emma Slater: God bless the Beek — and not just because he has a huge brood at home and another on the way. The actor’s quickstep featured a super solo spin and a nifty cart-wheel! Bummer the judges weren’t as impressed as this googly-eyed recapper. “Sometimes my scores don’t reflect my feelings. You are a terrific dancer,” Goodman. “I would have liked a little more hold. But it was full of clever choreography.” Added Inaba, “No doubt about it, that was a great routine … you are dancing like two soloists.” Score: 28 out of 40

Sailor Brinkley-Cook and Val Chmerkovskiy: The model — so lucky to have a Chmerkovskiy on her arm — sung along to “Ain’t No Mountain High Enough” while performing a very chipper cha-cha. “It’s another terrific performance,” Goodman said. “You really got yourself on a roll. This was a very well executed cha-cha.” “You really try to get the correct foot-leg placement,” added Tonioli. Score: 31 out of 40

Ally Brooke and Sasha Farber: Poor Farber had to choreograph a jive to “Proud Mary,” but it gave the pop singer plenty of opportunities to flip her hair and shake her tail feather like a millennial Tina Turner. And boy, was she a hit! “That was a diva jive,” said Tonioli. “Totally in command of the stage.” “I was proud of watching that,” added Goodman. “Good technique, great personality.” Score: 32 out of 40

Lauren Alaina and Gleb Savchenko: The country star foxtrotted her way through “Jolene” from Dolly Parton, and had her best week as a result. “It was very, very accomplished,” said Goodman. “You have arrived,” continued Inaba. Score: 32 out of 40
Hannah Brown and Alan Bersten: The bachelorette’s Pasodoble was briefly upstaged by a crazy light show on the floor, but her precision and intensity definitely shone through. “I thought it was so passionate and delightful,” said Tonioli. “You did it with an air of calmness,” added Goodman. Score: 32 out of 40

Kel Mitchell and Witney Carson: The comedian — super cute in sea-foam — was a hip-swinging genius in his jammin’ cha-cha. “That is what I’ve been waiting for!” said Inaba. “I actually saw you come out, your personality,” added Tonioli. “You only have to believe in yourself.” Goodman had something to add but … oops, Remini annoyed him so he waved Tom Bergeron away. Score: 32 out of 40

The night’s bottom two couples were Lamar and Peta and Karamo and Jenna.
And the night’s eliminated couple — based on judges scores from both last week and this week and a lack of live audience votes — was Lamar and Peta.
