Cristiano Ronaldo’s brace was not enough to help Juventus to the quarterfinal of this season’s UEFA Champions League as French club Lyon edged the Italian champions courtesy the away-goal’s rule.

Although the Old Lady won the second leg 2-1 on Friday night, August 7, it ended 2-2 on aggregates as Lyon won the first leg 1-0 before football was suspended due to the lockdown.

Memphis Depay’s away goal at the Allianz stadium gave the French side the upper hand to win it courtesy the away goals.

Desperate Juventus started the second leg brightly with the main-man Cristiano Ronaldo powering a shot over the bar, however the referee signaled offside as early as the 8th minute.

However Lyon stunned the home fans in the 11th minute when Rodrigo Bentancour conceded a penalty after he tripped Houssem Aouar in the area. After checks by the VAR, the penalty stood and was eventually slotted home by Memphis Depay.

The Old Lady had another glorious opportunity to restore parity in the 20th minute with Ronaldo’s header flashing just wide the post as the search for an equalizer goes on.

In the 37th minute Gonzalo Higuain’s header was saved by goalkeeper Anthony Lopes to deny the hosts the much sought equalizer.

It was pressure upon pressure as Juventus ran riot upfront with Ronaldo and Bentancour playing a delicious one-two combining well but the effort went wide in the 38th minute.

Juve finally found the back of the net through a Cristiano Ronaldo spot kick in the 43rd minute after Memphis Depay had handled the ball in the danger area. The Portuguese striker powered home the ball to put his side back in contention.

Both sides went into the break with the scoreline at 1-1 but Lyon will go through courtesy their 1-0 away win in the first leg which puts them ahead 2-1 on aggregates.

Juventus returned from the tunnel firing from all cylinders and then in the 59th minute, Cristiano Ronaldo fired home a left-footer from outside the box to send the home side wild.

2-1 Juventus on the night and that made it 2-2 on aggregates, but the French side will go through courtesy the away goals rule.

In search for the all-important goal, Ronaldo tried to grab the winner ten minutes from time but his shot was blocked and that was how it ended

Legit.ng also reported that Man City vs Real Madrid saw the Citizens cruised into the last eight of the Champions League following a 2-1 win.

Raheem Sterling and Gabriel Jesus scored in each half of the match as Karim Benzema’s equalizer was not enough for Los Merengues.
