The Chemical and Non-Metallic Products Senior Staff Association of Nigeria (CANMPSSAN) has condemned companies for using workers across the country as scapegoats on account of COVID-19.

The workers said this in reaction to the rate of job losses since the coronavirus pandemic broke out late February.

CANMPSSAN President, Segun David, in a statement on Monday, regretted the fate of workers.

“The present time is a difficult time for Nigerian workers who have to deal with the challenges of job loss, reduced salaries and zero appraisals at workplaces”, he said.

David warned entrepreneurs to stop making workers “sacrificial lambs’’ whenever there was a need to cut costs in an economic crisis or difficulties.

“We reject being used as scapegoats whenever management is contemplating on cost-cutting measures,” the union leader added.

He advised all company managements to always engage their staff to improve capacity without job losses.

David noted that collaborative engagements will help to strategize in a way that will be favourable to both parties.

“Coronavirus has reminded all the importance of taking one’s health seriously. Employers of labour should put measures in place to make work conducive for staff. Workers should not always bear the brunt when there is a shortfall in finances.”

CANMPSSAN urged the government and leaders to be prompt in attending to Nigerians’ demand.
