Borno State Governor, Babagana Umara Zulum says lockdown in the state will soon be relaxed to allow traders, farming communities and those relying on subsistence activities to engage in their daily struggles for survival.

Speaking at a meeting with the leadership of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) at the Maiduguri Government House, Zulum said, the government has decided to relax the lockdown. “I have called you to seek your suggestion on how we can contain the spread of the COVID-19 during the relaxation period”.

He told the CAN leadership in the state, ”Borno is an agrarian society and with the setting in of the rainy season, farmers must be allowed to go to their farms while those that do menial jobs for their sustenance should also be allowed to seek for their daily bread,” he added.

Earlier, the governor appreciated the Christian community for supporting the government in obeying the lockdown and urged them to provide answers to how social distancing can be maintained and the measures to be taken.

He informed the leadership of CAN that since he had consulted with the Muslim Imams to hear their suggestions, it was only right to hear from the Christians since the Christians do hold their services adding that he will continue to have regular interface with them.

Speaking on behalf of the Christian delegation, the CAN Chairman Bishop William Mohammed Naga appreciated the governor for his foresight and considerations.
