CONI requests suspension of Serie A

CONI President Giovanni Malago has requested for all sports activities in Italy to stop until April 3, in line with the government’s latest decree, after an emergency meeting in Rome this afternoon.

A meeting was convened between Malago and Italy’s Secretary General Carlo Mornati at the CONI headquarters in Rome in order to discuss if sporting events should continue in light of the rising Coronavirus cases that have halted the country to a standstill.

An official press release states that Malago affirms his position that all sporting events, professional and amateur, should be suspended until April 3.

Malago will now inform Italian Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte and Minister of Sport Vincenzo Spadafora of his position in relation to the on-going crisis.

A new decree would therefore have to be issued by the Italian government, to override the current one in which it states that Serie A matches can still be played, but behind closed doors.
