Newcastle legend, Alan Shearer and former Arsenal star, Ian Wright, have hailed Chelsea midfielder, Billy Gilmour, after the 18-year-old’s impressive performance in the Blues’ 2-0 FA Cup fifth-round win against Liverpool on Tuesday.
Gilmour was outstanding in the midfield for Frank Lampard’s side as they defeated the Reds at Stamford Bridge, thanks to goals from Willian and Ross Barkley.
Speaking after the match, Shearer told Match of the Day: “Frank Lampard said before the game that he [Gilmour] deserves to play.
“He has put a performance in tonight which says to the manager, “you have to keep me in this team.
“He has worked hard, he’s impressed in training, and he was mightily impressive out on that pitch against some big players and a massive football club.
“Nothing fazed him, and he was magnificent. I have been impressed by him tonight. Jorginho is neat and tidy, but Billy tonight went forward, and for the strikers, that’s great.”
Also speaking, Wright added: “Chelsea deserve all the plaudits, and Gilmour deserves all the plaudits. Liverpool was so disappointing.
“No shots in the second half. Chelsea did the same as Watford, they did not give them any time on the ball, and the Liverpool players just did not produce tonight, I was expecting more.
“The positions Gilmour takes up and the simplicity of his game for an 18-year-old.
“People will say we are going overboard, but we are not because when you watch a player like that come in and play like that. lovely skills, great feet.”
