Manchester United legend, Rio Ferdinand, has slammed Real Madrid goalkeeper, Thibaut Courtois, for Manchester City’s first goal in the Champions League round of 16 second leg tie on Friday night at Etihad.

Ferdinand said Courtois showcased his weakness with the ball at his feet against Pep Guardiola’s side as City defeated Real Madrid 2-1 to qualify for the last 8 on 4-2 aggregate.

Courtois was playing out from the back but clearly looked uncomfortable.

But it was perhaps defender Raphael Varane who should take the majority of the blame for Raheem Sterling’s first goal for City.

Varane dawdled on the ball, and Gabriel Jesus immediately capitalized on it, setting up Sterling for an easy finish.

But it was Courtois whose pass initially put Varane in trouble and Ferdinand criticized the former Chelsea keeper.

“He takes a good touch to be fair, Courtois,” Ferdinand said on BT Sport.

“[But] play forward, all this playing sideways and back.

“And Varane, dilly-dallies on the ball, his first touch was under his feet so he had to take another one, he was closed down brilliantly by Jesus.

“It was a great goal from Man City’s perspective but something that could have easily been avoided if they just played a little bit more direct at times. That’s been their own fault.

“But Courtois, we’ve seen him for many years at Chelsea etc. His footwork has always been something that has been questionable, and today there’s more evidence than ever.”
