Caputo: 'Wanted to get across this message'

Sassuolo’s Francesco Caputo has revealed that the players “are afraid too” after celebrating his goal with a comforting message to the audience at home.

The 32-year-old scored a brace to take his tally to 13 goals this term, as Sassuolo overcame Brescia with a 3-0 win in an empty MAPEI Stadium.

But the former Empoli striker has revealed that the players thought the League would have suspended the games “earlier” to protect the society.

“We thought the season would be stopped earlier,” he told Sky Sport Italia. “We want to protect our families.

“For example, at home I have my wife with three children, not making them leave our house is very difficult but we are very attentive to the rules, to contact.

“We live in a dressing room every day, we are 30 people, it’s not easy and we must shield everyone’s health.”

After scoring on Monday night, he ran straight to the camera to convey a message to the fans watching at home, reading: “Everything will be fine. Stay at home”.

“It was my idea, I hadn’t told anyone, I wanted to get this message across,” he added. “It’s a difficult period for the whole nation, it’s absurd.

“Even at the level of football, we don’t know if we play or not. We are sorry and we are also afraid. Now we have to regroup and start again.”
