The presidency has done a comparison between development that rocked the United States (US) prior to President Donald Trump’s eventual impeachment and what is obtainable in Nigeria.

A presidential media aide, Lauretta Onochie, who tweeted about Trump’s impeachment on Wednesday, January 13, was referring directly to the Capitol invasion in Washington DC.

The ugly sight was seen by many political observers, including Onochie, as an attempt at insurrection.

The media aide said while this caused serious consequences for the American leader, in Nigeria, it is called freedom of speech.

“In America, it’s insurrection. In Nigeria, they called it freedom of speech There ought to be consequences for those who instigate violence in our nation.”

Earlier, Trump was reported to have been impeached by the US House of Representatives led by Speaker Nancy Pelosi.

Trump who only has few days to the expiration of his tenure was impeached after he incited his followers to attack the Capitol in an effort to stop the certification of Joe Biden’s presidential election win.

The Democrats alongside some of their Republican colleagues voted to impeach the controversial president on allegation of “incitement of insurrection”.

The resolution passed 232 to 197. With this, Trump had made history as the only American president impeached twice.

However, it was unknown when the House will send the article of impeachment over to the Senate.

After the Senate receives the article, a trial would take place and if enough senators vote to convict him, Trump will be removed from office. The senators can also vote to ban him from taking public office again.
