British holidaymakers are furious after waiters at a restaurant in Greece charged them £72 for just eight soft drinks

British holidaymakers were left fuming after a Rhodes restaurant landed them with a £72 (€82) bill for just eight soft drinks.

Vikki Scott was at The Gate on the Greek island when she was stunned to be charged £12 (€14) for one milkshake.

It comes amid a spate of complaints from tourists who face higher prices than expected while visiting other countries.

Ms Scott was on a break with four of her family and friends when she was ‘ripped off’ and shared her story on social media as a warning to others.

On Facebook, she wrote: ‘Went to The Gate restaurant in Old Rhodes Town for a drink! The bill for eight soft drinks was €82 – €14 for a milkshake!!

‘I confronted him and all he could say was ‘thank you lady’ people like him should not be allowed to rip off tourists.

‘On our way back he posed for the photo until he realised who I was then he followed me down the street telling me I couldn’t take his photo. Please share this especially in Rhodes sites to stop others getting ripped off!’

She shared a photo of the receipt, showing the whopping prices that the restaurant charged.

Social media users accused the business of exploiting tourists, with Judith Burry saying: ‘All I can say is have your wits about you. Many places rip off the tourists. Easy money for them. I would have asked for a proper till receipt. No receipt no pay.’

Xavier Lenarts warned that she had also experienced similar treatment and suggested holidaymakers avoid the area.

The Gate is rated as one star on TripAdvisor, where 103 reviewers out of 161 branded it ‘terrible’. 

Users have titled their negative reviews as ‘awful’, ‘oh dear’ and ‘avoid at all costs’ on the site.  

But some blamed Ms Scott, with Jan Manessi commenting: ‘Check the menu prices- otherwise only yourself to blame!’

Alexandros Angelopoulos pointed out the large size of one of the drinks, writing: ‘€14 for a milkshake is expensive. But €14 for a litre milkshake is not.’ Panos Boutsikos said: ‘Next time READ THE MENU moron’ 

The post follows a tourist being billed £521 for six pieces of calamari at a beach bar in Santorini, Greece, last month. 

Meanwhile an American couple forked were handed a £70 bill after ordering two burgers and three coffees.
