Alhaji Jubil Martins-Kuye, Nigerian former minister of commerce and industry, has reportedly passed away at the age of 78.

According to a family source, the former minister who served twice died in his hometown in Ago-Iwoye on Sunday morning.

A chartered accountant who practised for several years in Lagos and oversees before moving to politics, Kuye was appointed minister on 6 April 2010 when former president Goodluck Jonathan, then an acting president, announced a new cabinet.

Martins-Kuye was a member of the Social Democratic Party (SDP) and a senator in the Nigerian Third Republic before it was truncated.

He ran for governorship on the platform of Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in 1999 but lost to Olusegun Osoba in Ogun State.

Martin-Kuye, who was also Aare Musilumi of Ogun state for several decades, worked across Nigeria’s political and ideological spectrum and sought alliances between the north and the south.

The late minister will be buried shortly after 4:00 p.m. according to Islamic rites in his sprawling country home in Ago-Iwoye. He left behind his two wives and children.

Meanwhile, Legit.ng reported that he academic community in the country was plunged into mourning following the death of Folabi Olumide, a renowned professor who was the pioneer vice chancellor of Lagos State University (LASU).

The passing on the late don was announced by the current vice-chancellor of the LASU, Professor Olanrewaju Adigun Fagbohun, in a statement.

Olumide died on Friday, January 8, after a brief illness at the age of 81 years. He was, however, succeeded by Jadesola Akande after he was removed from the position for alleged “financial and administrative improprieties.”
