There are indications that the last-minute efforts carried out by Speaker Femi Gbajabiamila of the House of Representatives to halt a planned strike by the organised labour may have failed to yield any positive result.
This follows a report by Channels Television indicating that the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), which is one of the umbrella bodies for the country’s workers, insists that the planned strike action would go ahead as planned.
Earlier reports had showed that the speaker was in a meeting with the leadership of the organisation to come to an amicable resolution of the issues surrounding the grievances over the recently increased price of petrol and electricity.

The meeting between Gbajabiamila and the NLC leadership reportedly held at the National Assembly Complex in Abuja.
However, after the closed-door meeting, the NLC president, Comrade Ayuba Wabba, told journalists that planned strike would go on as declared.
He added that the plan could only be stopped if the federal government addressed the issues raised against the government.
Asked his position on the court orders stopping the planned strike, Wabba said the NLC had not been served and as a result, he cannot speak about it.
The NLC president noted that there had been a judgement by a Federal High Court stopping the increase of electricity tariff, an order he said the government disobeyed.
He said the only thing that could stop the strike action is for the government to immediately change its positions on the electricity and petrol price hikes before 12 midnight when the strike is to commence.

Legit.ng had reported that in a second attempt to stop the NLC and the Trade Union Congress (TUC) from embarking on their planned strike, the federal government recently obtained a fresh court order.
NLC and TUC had slated their protest for Monday, September 28, over the recent hike in the price of motor spirit known as petrol and the electricity tariff.
