Bologna in seven-goal Villarreal thriller

There was no shortage of entertainment when Bologna fell to defeat in a 4-3 thriller with Villarreal, hitting the woodwork twice.

The pre-season friendly was played at the Stadio Olimpico in Serravalle, San Marino, and Coach Sinisa Mihajlovic watched from his hospital bed during chemotherapy via live-streaming, as he has done throughout this summer.

Rodrigo Palacio cancelled out an early Moi Gomez opener, then Andreas Skov Olsen and Mattias Svanberg were denied by goalkeeper Sergio Asenjo, but Roberto Soriano hit the upright.

Andre Zambo Anguissa and Andrea Poli stung the gloves of the two goalkeepers, but Santi Cazorla and substitute Samuel Chukwueze opened up a 3-1 lead.

Bologna showed great character to fight back, as Federico Santander’s header and a goal from Japan international Takehiro Tomiyasu completed the comeback.

However, Villarreal snatched the 4-3 victory with Gerard Moreno’s left-foot screamer into the top corner.

Poli thought he’d made it 4-4 right at the death, but Asenjo palmed it on to the upright.
