BMO to appoint retiring BCE CEO George Cope as chair

George Cope is to become chairman of BMO Financial Group in March after he leaves his post as president and CEO of telecommunications and CTV network owner BCE Inc. in January, the bank said Friday.

Cope, 58, replaces Robert Prichard, who’s been chairman since 2012 and an independent director for two decades, BMO said in a statement.

“I am fully behind BMO’s strong management team and its plans to deliver on the bank’s strategic priorities,” Cope said in the statement. “On behalf of the board, I offer Rob our thanks for guiding BMO through a period of tremendous progress while laying the groundwork for continued success.”

Cope has been president and CEO of Bell Canada and BCE, Canada’s largest telecommunications and media company, since 2008. This week he presided over third-quarter earnings that showed revenue climbing more than expected after record increases in wireless subscriptions.

Previously Cope led Telus Mobility and Clearnet Communications Inc. He’s got a Bachelor in Arts Honours Business Administration from the Richard Ivey School of Business at Western University. He was appointed a Member of the Order of Canada in 2014 and was inducted into the Canadian Business Hall of Fame in 2018.

“George’s distinguished record as a public company chief executive and reputation as a strategic leader committed to innovation, growth and good governance make him the ideal chair to take the board forward,” Prichard said.
