A married couple raked in more than £25,000 in benefits after they failed to declare almost £150,000 from three inheritances.

Kevin and Geraldine Daniels, both 64, had received £149,000 over a two-year period between 2015 and 2017.

The husband and wife from Newport, Gwent, admitted benefit fraud at Cardiff Crown Court.

They had continued to claiming income support without notifying authorities.

Barrister Jeffrey Jones said the couple were ‘ashamed’ of their actions after Thomas Roberts for the prosecution said that the savings threshold for income support claimants was £16,000.

Mr Roberts told the court that ‘the couple had repaid all the money’ and pointed out that the claim did not begin as a fraudulent one.

He added that they still care for their adult son at their South Wales home.

Judge Tracey Lloyd-Clarke noted the couple had repaid the amount in full, so there was no loss to the taxpayer.

There was no order for compensation, but they were ordered to pay £340 toward court costs.

She gave them each a 24-week jail term, suspended for 18 months, and ordered them to complete 20 hours of a rehabilitation activity, plus 180 hours of unpaid work.
