Staff at the Queen’s Balmoral estate have slammed ‘disgusting’ litter louts who blighted one of its walkers’ retreats.

Piles of rubbish have been left at the bothy at Glas-allt Shiel, by Loch Muick in Aberdeenshire.

Plastic bottles and McDonald’s takeaway meals have been dumped on the estate, where the monarch spends her summer holidays, in recent days.

Campers have also been lighting fires, risking wildfires and leaving the ground scorched on the 55,000 acre estate.

Plastic bottles and McDonald’s takeaway meals have been dumped on the Balmoral Estate at the bothy at Glas-allt Shiel, by Loch Muick in Aberdeenshire. The ground is also scorched from where campers have lit fires

Balmoral posted an image on Twitter of waste piled into bin bags, saying: ‘Some of the rubbish collected from the Glas-allt Shiel bothy this week! Disgusting!!’

Another picture showing rubbish dumped next to the remains of a campfire was accompanied by the message: ‘Please #treadlightly and #leavenotrace when visiting Balmoral Estate.

‘This mess was found near Loch Muick recently and tidied up by Balmoral Ranger Service.’

Balloons and bags of rubbish left on the Queen’s 55,000 acre estate. The Glas-allt Shiel bothy is used by people hiking up Lochnagar, the mountain treasured by Prince Charles

The Glas-allt Shiel bothy is used by people hiking up Lochnagar, the mountain treasured by Prince Charles and immortalised in a children’s book he wrote.

The 3789ft peak is at the centre of the prince’s illustrated 1980 children’s book The Old Man Of Lochnagar.

The book tells the story of an old man who leaves his cave in the cliffs for adventures in the surrounding countryside.
