Assam floods toll reaches 88, more NDRF teams rushed to Barak Valley

GUWAHATI: Assam reported seven more deaths, which include three children, in floods on Tuesday, taking the toll in both deluge and landslides to 88 as the situation remained critical for a week now.

Monsoon activity over the state has weakened but most of the major rivers in the two valleys —

Brahmaputra

and Barak — remained in spate, resulting in spread of floodwaters to new areas

The number of affected people is over 55 lakh in 32 districts.

According to Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA), Barpeta district is the worst hit, where over 12 lakh people have been affected. Over 26 lakh people have been displaced from their homes and are currently living in 862 relief camps.

On Tuesday morning, the Centre dispatched four additional teams of

NDRF

rescuers by air from Bhubaneswar to Silchar town in the Barak Valley, which is witnessing its worst-ever

urban flood situation

.

A pregnant woman was rescued from an inundated area in Silchar after her husband sent SoS emails to the CM, deputy commissioner and the NDRF on Tuesday.
