In what will come as a surprise to many Nigerians given the fact that many people have been clamouring for it, the appointment of new service chiefs by President Buhari has been described as illegal.

This is according to Femi Falana (SAN) in a statement he made available to journalists.

To back his claim, the Human Rights Lawyer quoted a 2013 judgment which described the appointments of Service Chiefs without the concurrence of the National Assembly as illegal and unconstitutional, Channels TV reports.

Consequently, he added that the Service Chiefs have only been nominated but not appointed.

Meanwhile, Legit.ng had reported that the Coalition of Civil Society Groups for Good Governance and Transparency (CCSGGGT) on Wednesday, January 27, called on President Muhammdu Buhari to honour the outgoing service chiefs with meritorious awards.

CCSGGGT said the chief of defence staff, General Gabriel Olonisakin; the chief of army staff, Lieutenant Tukur Buratai; the chief of air staff, Sadique Abubakar, and the chief of naval staff, vice-admiral Ibok-Ete Ibas should be honoured for their commitment to end terrorism and other forms of criminality in Nigeria.

A statement signed by the group’s conveners, Emmanuel Ogar and Abubakar Gana and seen by Legit.ng said the chiefs should be given the award of the Grand Commander of the Order of Niger (GCON).

Also, a democratic group has called on the immediate past service chiefs to always make themselves available for consultations by their successors.

The National Democratic Front said the past service chiefs’ wealth of experience can be used by their new colleagues in the effort to end the war against terrorism in Nigeria.

Legit.ng also reported that the presidency has finally lifted the lids on the appointment of the new service chiefs, saying the decision was based on the need to rejig the security structure of the country.

Presidential aide, Adesina, made this revelation on Tuesday, January 26.

Adesina said President Buhari felt it was time to appoint new service chiefs, hence the decision to bring in new men with fresh ideas and strategy.
