Governor Ben Ayade of Cross River, on Thursday, May 27 said he joined the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) for the benefit of the state.
Ayade said this while addressing APC youth groups who held a rally to welcome him to the party at the governor’s office in Calabar, the state capital.

Premium Times quoted the governor as saying:
“The APC was the appropriate vehicle that will bring full economic benefits to the state.”
Some Nigerians on social media have been reacting to the comments of the Cross River state governor.
Osa Director wrote on Twitter:
“Ayade joined APC to attract federal benefits for himself, obviously!”
Tukura Nuhu Nyigwa wrote:

Meanwhile, Donald Duke, a former governor of Cross River state, has lamented over the defection of Governor Ayade to the APC.
In a statement publicly announcing his return to the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, on Wednesday, May 26, Duke said it is unfortunate that Governor Ayade convinced him to return to the PDP only for him to defect to the APC soon after.
On the same day, . reported that the chairman of the PDP caretaker committee in Cross River state, Effiok Cobham, confirmed during a press briefing, that Duke has returned to the PDP.
When asked to confirm the speculations that the former governor had returned to the party, Cobham confirmed that Duke has registered with the PDP.
