Minister of Transportation Rotimi Amaechi Friday inspected the Dala Inland Dry Port and also commissioned the North-West Zonal Directorate Office Complex of the Nigerian Shippers Council in Kano State.

The Minister during the inspection of the Port lamented the number of out-of-school children in the area and urged the contractors of the project to establish a primary school as a form of Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR).

“Meanwhile, we saw an army of children chasing us as we were coming and I said this is a huge challenge on our education. Whether we like it or not, if we don’t educate them, they will educate us and when they educate us we will run into our houses. So we better educate them,” Amaechi said during his visit to the Palace of the Emir of Kano, Aminu Ado Bayero.

He also took to his official handle on Twitter to announce that he has mandated the contractors to do the school construction.

“Inspecting the site of Dala Inland Dry Port in Kano with the State Governor, @GovUmarGanduje today, I mandated the Project Contractors to include a Primary School in their Corporate Social Responsibility plans and offer free education to children in that area,” Amaechi said on Twitter.

Speaking on the citing of the Dry Port, the Minister said Kano is a choice location because of its economic importance.

“You can’t ignore the economic importance of Kano. This kind of project is cited where it will be of economic value to Nigerians and the people of Kano.

“We were here to commission the zonal headquarters of Nigerian Shippers Council so those who do the shipping and do import and export will find it easy to operate from here. And other states will benefit. Businesses will continue to thrive,” he said.

He added that the establishment of Dala Inland Dry Port, in Kano is an effort of the Federal Government at bringing shipping and related services to the doorstep of consumers, particularly those located in the hinterland.

“I, therefore, implore the good people of Kano and its environs to put to optimal and beneficial use, the Dala Inland Dry Port, when fully completed,” the Minister added.

Governor Umar Ganduje in his address said appreciated the efforts of the President Muhammadu Buhari-led administration in making the port a reality.

The governor thanked President Buhari for the “Good and kind gesture for making Kano, the real commercial nerve centre for the North and some West African countries.”
