– Douglas Maina was best known for winning a bronze medal in the bantamweight during the 1978 African Games

– The ex-pugilist is said to have died at his Nairobi home after a long illness as he was always in and out of hospital

– Maina’s death prompted tributes from fans who had fond memories of his ring days

The Kenyan sporting fraternity is in mourning following the death of former boxer Douglas Maina.

Curtains fell on Maina, who won a bantamweight bronze medal during the 1978 African Games in Algeria, on Thursday, April 23.

According to Nation Sport citing national coordinator of Hero and Heroines in Sports Rose Tata-Muya, the boxing legend died after a long illness at his Donholm home in Nairobi.

Tata-Muya divulged she received the tragic news on Thursday morning from Maina’s wife, Wanjiru.

“He has been in-and-out of hospital for some years,” the coordinator told Nation.

“It’s a sad morning for the country,” she added.

Known for his deadly punches, Maina was part of the famous medal-winning group “Hit Squad” that won medals at the 1978 Edmonton Club Games.

Earlier, Legit.ng reported that boxing legend Floyd Mayweather has taken to social media to share a stunning throwback picture of his family amid coronavirus.

The 43-year-old dressed in Air Jordan outfit struck a pose along with his wife and three children in what looks like their living room, and they all wore a simple smile for the camera.

While sharing the post, the multiple major world titles holder captioned it “My family” #TBT.

However, the retired boxer is probably yet to recover from the death of his spouse after spending 15 years of his life with her.

According to reports, Josie Harris was found unresponsive in a car earlier in March and was confirmed dead after medics checked her up.

Mayweather must have enjoyed the support of his late partner having won all 50 of his professional boxing fights before retiring in 2017.

Although there were indications he was planning to come out of retirement for the part two of his bout against Conor McGregor, the current coronavirus ravaging the world might have cancelled that now.

The ‘Money-man’ remains the most paid boxer in history even after hanging his gloves and he has since then ventured into promotions.
