Adult Swim’s anticipated anime adaptation of Uzumaki, the acclaimed manga from horror master Junji Ito, has resurfaced with an extremely brief teaser and a release date: October 2022.

Originally announced in 2019 for a 2020 release, Uzumaki’s production was one of many interrupted by the COVID-19 pandemic. In a new update, director Hiroshi Nagahama offers further explanation, saying that the four-episode miniseries is a larger-than-usual production, ostensibly because of its black-and-white animation style that aims to mirror Ito’s signature inky black-and-white style to a disconcerting degree.

Nagahama also offered an incredibly short tease of the series in motion, albeit one entirely devoid of context or scares. Those wanting to see more will have to sit tight, as Nagahama says he intends to share more as the release date approaches, but given that it’s over a year away, we might be waiting a good while for our first real glimpse at what Uzumaki looks like.

That is, however, plenty of time to read the manga — or watch the 2000 live-action adaptation if you’re feelin’ nasty.
