The Adamawa Muslim Council has called on the faithful to pray that God should intervene in the coronavirus pandemic ravaging the world.
Council Chairman Mr Gambo Jika, said this yesterday in Yola.
Jika said the grave danger posed by the virus underscored the need for divine intervention and protection.
“As the federal and state governments are tirelessly making effort to contain the coronavirus pandemic, Muslim faithful should fast and engage in intensive prayers for divine intervention, protection, and quick end to the disease,” he said.
The faith-based council chairman advised mosque committees to provide hand washing facilities at the entrances of prayer houses.
He said the committees should ensure that the congregation adhered to social distancing guidelines recommended by the World Health Organisation.
According to him, every individual should properly wash his hands with soap before entering mosques.
Jika hailed Islamic organisations and Muslims for their cooperation amid the lockdown.
He urged Muslims to maintain the same spirit by strictly following doctors’ advice on the imperative of abstaining from handshakes, touching of mouth, nose, and eyes as well as wearing of face masks in crowded area.
He appealed to corporate organisations, public-spirited individuals, non-governmental organisations, and civil society organisations to assist the needy.
“Managing the coronavirus pandemic is a collective effort as the disease does not have respect for religion, the tribe or political affiliation of any person.
“The council will continue to give maximum support to government policies and cooperate with all other relevant agencies in fighting COVID-19,” Jika said.
He praised the state for relaxing the lockdown, saying it would enable the people to buy foodstuffs and other essential items.
