Five people were stabbed at a Baltimore-area shopping center on Saturday, and the attacker was fatally shot by police officers, the authorities said.

The stabbing victims’ injuries were not life-threatening. The attacker, a man, was not publicly identified, Officer Jennifer Peach, a spokeswoman for the Baltimore County Police Department, said at a news conference.

Officer Peach said the police were first called about 1:45 p.m., about a person who was acting aggressively inside a liquor store at the mall.

Initial reports were that he was threatening people with a boxcutter. Officials recovered a hunting-type knife with a three-inch blade that was used in the attack, she said.

Four people were attacked inside the liquor store and another outside a restaurant at the shopping center, which is in Cockeysville, Md., about 17 miles north of Baltimore.

Officer Peach said officers confronted the man at a nearby intersection.

“During their encounter with the suspect there, he was armed with a knife and our officers were forced to discharge their weapons that resulted in a critical injury to the suspect,” she said.

It was not immediately clear if the victims were customers or employees of the businesses. An off-duty paramedic who was at the mall helped some of the victims, who were taken to hospitals, officials said.

The police were working with Maryland Transit Administration Police to determine if the man was involved in a separate episode on the transit system earlier on Saturday, Officer Peach said.

The police would not discuss how many times the man was shot by officers, citing a pending investigation and the need to review officers’ body camera footage.
