MONROE, La. (KNOE) – 19 mosquito pools in Ouachita Parish have tested positive for the West Nile Virus in the latest round of testing.
According to Ouachita Parish Mosquito Abatement, the pools are located in the following areas:
Monroe: Between South Grand and the Ouachita River
Monroe: Near Bernstein Park/Zoo
Monroe: Near River Oaks Subdivision
Monroe: Garden District
Monroe: Near Hwy. 165 and Ferrand
Monroe: Near Lakeshore Subdivision
Monroe: Between Forsythe Ave. and the Ouachita River
Monroe: Near Oregon Trail Subdivision
Monroe: Near the Intersection of I-20 and Orange Street
West Monroe: Near Smith Street (Bawcomville)
West Monroe: Near D’Arbonne Hills Subdivision
West Monroe: Near Hidden Lakes Subdivision (2)
West Monroe: Between First Baptist of West Monroe and West Monroe High School
Ouachita: Howard Brown Road area
Ouachita: Near Frenchman’s Bend Sub.
Ouachita: Near Hwy. 165 and Old Sterlington Road
Ouachita: Near Stubbs Vinson and Cadillac Road Inter.
Ouachita: Off of Hwy. 2 in Sterlington
The mosquito pools were collected on July 23-25, 2019.
The affected urban areas in West Monroe & Monroe will be treated by air on August 4 and 5.
Other affected areas will be treated by truck on the nights of Aug 2, 2019, and Aug 5, 2019.
Ouachita Parish Mosquito Abatement reminds everyone to take caution against mosquitos when working outdoors, especially at night.
The CDC says, “West Nile virus (WNV) is the leading cause of mosquito-borne disease in the continental United States.”
About 1 out of 150 infected people develop a serious, sometimes fatal, illness.
Mosquito Abatement says mosquito repellant should be used on exposed skin and thin clothing because mosquitos can bite through thin clothing.
They also say you should dump any containers holding water outside because mosquitos breed in free-standing water.
