One person is dead and five are injured following in a three-vehicle collision on Highway 401 in Mississauga, Ont., Peel paramedics say.
Four people were transported to hospital with a variety of injuries and one person was transported to a trauma centre, paramedics say.
Two of the injured are in life-threatening condition while the remaining three are in serious but stable condition.
Sgt. Kerry Schmidt, spokesperson for OPP’s Highway Safety Division, said initial reports are that a driver travelling eastbound on Highway 401 in the collector lane, lost control of their vehicle after overtaking the transport truck.
“The vehicle collided with the truck, rolled over and burst into flames. That vehicle was completely consumed by fire,” Schmidt said.
He said the collision has resulted in “massive damage” to the median concrete wall which separates the express lanes from the collector lane.
The eastbound lanes on Highway 401 will be closed between Highway 403 and Dixie Road for investigation.
“This will be a significant cleanup and will take, I would say, the better portion of the night,” Schmidt said.
