SUSPECT IN RIMI’S WIFE MURDER JAILED FIVE YEARS
The suspect in the murder case of late Abubakar Rimi’s wife, Mustafa Rimi, was on Wednesday sentenced to a five-year jail term for theft.
The suspect is not the biological son of the deceased, Sa’adatu Rimi, nor that of late Abubakar Rimi.
The presiding judge, Lawal Wada of Kano State High Court 7, ruled that the prosecution had failed to prove the three-count charge of conspiracy, armed robbery and culpable homicide against the suspect.
He said that the body of evidences before him indicated that the suspect only committed theft.
Mr. Wada said that the case of theft was established because the accused was found in possession of two handsets of the deceased.
He added that the jail term would start from the date of warrant of the sentence.
The judge condemned the handling of the case by the prosecuting counsels, saying they had failed to establish the charges brought against the suspect beyond reasonable doubt.
The counsel to the defendant, Ibrahim Nasarawa, told newsmen after the verdict that they would review the judgement to seek possible redress as the suspect “appeared to have been punished unfairly considering the number of years in detention”.
