STIFFER PENALTY FOR DUMPING REFUSE ON ROAD MEDIAN – OYAWOYE

In a bid to avert the reoccurrence of flooding incident and ensure a clean and healthy environment in the State of Osun,  governmenthas warned the people to desist from the habit of dumping refuse on road median, drains, stream channels and other unapproved sites to avoid facing the full wrath of the law.

Commissioner for Environment and Sanitation, Professor Olubukola Oyawoye gave this warning at the Quarterly Ministerial Media conference, held at  Conference Hall ,Ministry of Information and Strategy , Abere , Osogbo, on Tuesday.

Professor Oyawoye who eulogized Governor Aregbesola over his effort to permanently put an end to flooding in the state, stated that the present administration has provided workable options to help the community manage  domestic waste in the environmentally friendly manner.

She,however, warned that any person caught  depositing refuse or waste matter or other materials on the street or public places will face the wrath of law.

According to the Commissioner, the decision was borne out of the fact that,” health is wealth ” and that a healthy mind is good for peaceful co-existence ,therefore,statutory environmental rules and regulations will now be strictly enforced as the Osun Waste Management Agency now has an enforcement unit to handle the exercise .

 

The Commissioner noted that the proactive steps of government  by procuring 61 Ro-Ro refuse trucks and 244 waste bins for PSP Programme for waste management under the O’ Clean plus initiative justified its new move to enforce sanitation laws in the state.

She stressed  that going by the step taken by the state government, nobody would have any excuses to give if he or she is caught running foul of the law, since a lot of sensitization and enlighten programme on the hazards of dirty environment and the menace of flooding have been done by the government throughout the state .

Oyawoye implored Local Governments to ensure that approved dump sites are created in their domain to facilitate effective waste management and that it could also be a source of revenue for them apart from keeping their environment tidy.

“It is imperative that all tiers of government collaborate to rid our environment of waste and refuses in order to promote good health and the general well-being of the good people of the sate of Osun”, she said
