Governor of the State of Osun, Rauf Aregbesola has directed that the Alekunwodo Plank Market, Osogbo be relocated immediately to the newly established International Plank Market along Iwo Road, Osogbo.
Special Adviser to the Governor on Commerce, Cooperatives and Empowerment, Dr. Olalekan Yinusa who represented Governor Aregbesola at the formal handing over of the market noted that the dream of the Aregbesola administration is to turn Osun State, especially Osogbo, into a regional commercial hub of the South-West.
He stated that the relocation necessitated by the perennial flood problem that has been traumatising the Alekunwodo Plank Market over the years which makes a permanent site for the plank market inevitable.
Dr. Yinusa advised the plank sellers to build their stalls according to what has been specified that in the master plan, while urging them to properly utilize the infrastructure put in place on the facility by government.
Commissioner for Lands, Physical Planning and Urban Development, Muyiwa Ige said the new plank market has a capacity for 1,500 stalls which will be constructed by the plank sellers themselves.
He noted that the opening up of Osogbo-Iwo-Ibadan road would turn the market into an international plank market to be patronized by the people from Ibadan and other neighbouring states.
Chairman Plank Sellers Association, Osun State Chapter, expressed gratitude to Governor Aregbesola for providing the association with a befitting plank market with infrastructural facilities such as like electricity, road network among others.
Dignitaries at the occasion include; the Special Adviser to the Governor on Rural and Community Development, Mr. Kunle Ige, Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Commerce, Cooperatives and Empowerment, Mr. Sunday Olayode, Surveyor General of the State and Directors from the Ministry of Commerce, Cooperatives and Empowerment.
