DEATH SENTENCE: APPELLATE COURT AGAIN SHIFTS AL-MUSTAPHA’S HEARING TO MAY 30.
The Court of Appeal in Lagos on Monday again pushed forward the hearing of the appeal against the death sentence hanging on the former Chief Security Officer to late Head of State, Gen Sani Abacha, Mr. Hamza Al-Mustapha to May 30. This followed the late filing of the state’s opposition in the case.
Mr. Al-Mustapha and Mr. Lateef Shofolahan, an aide to the presumed winner of June 12 1993 presidential election, late Mr. Moshood Abiola, are appealing a death sentence passed on them by Justice Mojisola Dada of a Lagos High Court, for the murder of Mrs. Kudirat Abiola, the wife of late Mr. Abiola.
The duo were sentenced to death by a Lagos High Court in Igbosere on January 30, 2012.
Their appeal on the death sentence before Justice Chuma Nweze could not be heard after the counsel to the Lagos State government, Femi Adamson informed the appellate court that he had an application for extension of time to enable the state government file its respondent’s brief of argument.
While apologizing for the late filing of the said application, Mr Adamson, who is an Assistant Chief State Counsel in the Lagos State Ministry of Justice, explained that it was due to hitches beyond his control.
