APC Merger: New Party Offers Best Solution To Nigeria’s Woes Say ACN Leaders

Natnl Conv.Leaders of the Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN) as well as some other progressive political parties have spoken with one voice- re-affirming their resolve to merge to form All Progressive Congress (APC) as alternative for bad governance in Nigeria. The affirmation was made at Onikan Stadium, Lagos, Thursday at the National and final convention of the ACN where the party leaders and members ratified their resolve to merge with other political parties.

The party is merging with the Congress for Progressive Change (CPC), All Nigeria Peoples Party (ANPP) and a faction of the All Progressive Grand Alliance (APGA).

The National Leader of the party, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu; the national Chairman, Chief Bisi Akande; Mallam Nuhu Ribadu; Governor Rauf Aregbesola and other ACN governors among others, said that the merger would offer the best solution for the plight of the country.

CPC Presidential Candidate, Alhaji Mohammed Buhari; Governor of Imo State, Chief Rochas Okorocha; former Governor of Kano State, Alhaji Ibrahim Shekarau among others, who were on solidarity attendance expressed optimism that the new party, would sweep away the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and work for the development of the nation.

Tinubu said that Nigeria must be a prosperous and secure nation that helps weaker nation to attain peace and stability, instead, the country is beset by woes on all sides, especially security and other sectors of governance. Explaining the basis for the merger, he said, it is imperative to sacrifice the current partisan identity to create a larger one which is capable of assuming leadership at the national level—“the current way of governance makes nation building impossible. What it does is make poverty and the erosion of a just society inevitable.

“Our people have had enough of having nothing. The current government’s trademark is to throw empty words and hollow action at our problems as if doing nothing will cause our troubles to leave from sheer boredom. Instaed, trouble mounts.

“If they have nothing to offer, except the nothing they have been giving us, let’s join hands with others to sweep them aside, so that we can keep pushing through and move this nation upward and forward. “This convention portends the coming of great political change. A storm is brewing. Don’t be frightened, it is a positive storm with a positive wind. Those things that have no roots and offer no solution to the plight of the people shall be swept away”, he stressed.

Describing the merger plan as the last best hope, Tinubu urged members of the party to not only take pride in what ACN has accomplished but have the vision, courage and passion, for the country requires the party to enter into a new phase of political maturity, sacrifice and cooperation in order to bring an era of progressive governance to Nigeria. In his expression,

Buhari noted that the emergence of APC is the continuation of what started late in 2010, saying that the arrangement started early this time and has recorded a significant success. The retired General said that his presence at the ACN convention was to give a support to the party and show that there is no other alternative to the merger arrangement.

Governor Rauf Aregbesola said the gathering was to rejoice that an alternative has been found for the growth and development of the country, as the APC will emerge to provide alternative for the country in terms of good governance. He added that the focus is not 2015 alone, but it has begun, as the new party would take over Anambra State in the next governorship election in the state. Governors

Babatunde Fashola (Lagos); Ibikunle Amosun (Ogun) and Okorocha (Imo) expressed happiness that they were part of the arrangement for the merger plan. They said that it is not going to be business as usual for the PDP in the next elections across the country, as the entire Nigerian are tired of the party and desire a change.

Also, Alhaji Nuhu Ribadu said that the APC is on the journey to build a new Nigeria. However, while other parties involved in the merger arrangement will also hold their conventions to adopt the merger arrangement, the APC convention will later hold to lunch the new party.
