24 injured, as Kano traffic officials clash with NURTW
A policeman and 23 others were injured in a free-for-all between officials of Kano Road Traffic Agency, KAROTA, and members of National Union of Road Transport Workers, NURTW, in Kano yesterday morning.
The incident, which occurred under Ado Bayero Bridge, triggered pandemonium as commuters and passers-by scampered for safety.
Security sources in the city said that the clash began when the traffic agency tried to close an illegal motor park located under the strategic fly-over along Zaria Road.
We learned that the planned eviction met with strong resistance from members of NURTW, who overpowered officials of the traffic agency and their armed escorts. Several vehicles were vandalised in the ensuing fight culminating in hiccups on both human and vehicular movement on the strategic federal highway.
Consequently, the Kano Police Command deployed personnel to the scene and restored normalcy, while the razing bonfires were dismantled for vehicular movement.
Confirming the incident, the Police Public Relations Officer in Kano, DSP Magaji Musa Majia, said that “a policeman was injured during the fracas.” DSP Majia further stated that “windscreen of a number of vehicles were smashed during the mayhem,” adding that normalcy has been restored.
He revealed that the Commissioner of Police, Rabiu Yusuf, has set up a committee to investigate the remote and the immediate cause of the fracas.
